Character limit
Twitter/X: this is a simple count of characters including spaces. It does not simulate the actual weighting system X uses (e.g. some script characters weigh more, links count as shortened URLs) and does not claim to match X's own counter. SMS: estimated, protocol-aware count — a GSM-7 message holds 160 septets (153 per part after the first, extended characters cost two); any other character switches the message to Unicode (UCS-2): 70 units for one part (67 per part after the first). Some carriers may behave differently.
Counts use Unicode grapheme clusters, so composed emoji and combining characters count as single characters. Sentence counting has limitations with abbreviations.
About this tool
Character Counter analyzes text locally in your browser using Unicode-aware rules.
- Characters as Unicode grapheme clusters, with and without spaces.
- UTF-8 byte size, words, sentences, paragraphs and non-empty lines.
- 280-character limit flagged as a simple estimate (no X weighting simulation), protocol-aware SMS estimate (GSM-7 160/153, UCS-2 70/67) and any custom limit.
- Live progress bar with remaining and over-limit feedback.
- Nothing is stored or transmitted — paste freely, text stays local.
